Art and design team Grant Ayliffe and Sara Cadogan have opened the doors of their vintage lighting, furniture and homewares store Number 8 in Croydon. Both share a love of all things quirky, eclectic and unusual and this is reflected in the ever changing stock in their new shop. Here you will discover vintage finds cleverly upcycled- so galvanised engineering crates become windowboxes, industrial lighting illuminates a dining table and post office sacks provide interesting storage solutions. Grant and Sara scour the country and even venture across the channel to France to source interesting finds that tell a story and that can be turned into pieces that are both practical and beautiful. Among the many things on offer this week is a 19th century (?) oak desk with black leather top, an 8 drawer plan chest on brass casters and a rescued and rewaxed medicine ball with a beautiful patina.
Tucked behind the shop is a spacious workshop where Grant, who originally trained as a furniture maker before going on to study at the Royal College of Art, and Sara, with her background in Fine Art and lifelong interest in collecting and interior design bring their pieces back to life, often mixing old and new to create an individual style. They have also started to offer a sourcing service as a result of customer demand,in addition to their interior design advice service and bespoke furniture making.
Number 8 is located at 83 Cherry Orchard Road. Opening times are Wednesday and Friday 3-7pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. From the spring the shop will be opening on Sundays.
